Most of the educational institutions in USA will assist you in finding accommodation while studying in USA. Accommodation are of two types i.e. a student can stay on campus (Halls of Residence / Students hostel) or Off campus (Home stay, Apartments/ Flats). Staying Off Campus is much more cheaper than staying On Campus.
In addition to tuition fees, a student has to spend on living expenses also. And this cost vary according to the city student will live in, On an average. TYPES OF DEGREES
Associate Degree:It is an academic degree awarded by the community colleges, junior colleges, business colleges and some bachelor's degree -granting colleges & universities, upon completion of a course of study usually lasting two years. In the USA , an associate degree is equivalent to the first two years of a four year college or university degree. It is the lowest in hierarchy of post secondary academic degrees offered in this country.
Bachelors Degree:Commonly known as Undergraduate degree. The duration of the bachelors course is 4 years. Students who have completed a part of their undergraduate degree and want to go to the USA, can apply as a transfer Student. There are two types of bachelors degree: B.A or B.S. Some universities in the USA offer either of the degrees in all fields and at times both the degrees in some field. Students need to appear for TOEFL/IELTS exams for admission.
Master Degree:Commonly known as a graduate. The duration of graduate courses may range from one year to two years depending upon the university. The various types of Masters degree are: MA, MS, MBA, MFA, etc. Students have to appear for the GMAT for management related subjects / GRE for arts, science or any other subjects and TOEFL/ IELTS exams for admission.
Doctorate:Commonly known as PhD. Duration of the same may range from 3 years to 5 years. Students can take admission for a PhD course after completion of their master's degree. PhD students need to submit a research proposal. Students need to appear for GRE/GMAT & TOEFL/IELTS exams for admissions.

Public Universities:These are state-affiliated institutions that are publicly-supported (financed by public taxes) and they're usually large in size. PART TIME JOBS ON CAMPUS / WORK AFTER COURSE
International Students can take up on - campus jobs after joining the college. Students are allowed to work 20 hrs per week on - campus. On campus jobs may include teaching assistantship or research assistantship where in a student can earn a $7 to $10 per hour i.e. around $ 500 - $600 per month or can get a waiver in tuition fees. With this, a student can also do internship in the related field which may or may not be with pay. On completion of the course student is allowed to work for 1 yr. popularly known as OPT (optional practical training). On completion of the 1yr OPT, a student can later apply for work on a HI B visa (work permit visa).

Q. Should I apply only to Top Ten Universities?
A.The acceptance ratio of top ten Universities is only 1% - 4%. Therefore, in order to improve your chances of admission, you should also apply to other Universities that offer good programs. Also the entry requirements are extremely stringent for such institutions. One must always remember that Ranking can be world wide, region based and even subject based. If one is looking for a ranked university, search should be subject based.
Q. Is only TOEFL applicable for USA, can a student also take IELTS?
